205 – Family Leave (FMLA)
The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) allows eligible employees (male and female) to take up to twelve (12) weeks of leave during any twelve (12) month period for the birth of a child, an award of adoption or foster care of a child, or to care for a spouse, child, parent, or self in a qualifying event. [CALEA Standard 22.1.2 a]
The law does not allow the use of family leave for intermittent care of commonplace illnesses such as colds or the flu.
Application forms for FMLA shall be maintained and supplied to employees by the Human Resources Division.
Adequate written notice (30 days), except in the case of an emergency, must be provided. Such written notice must stipulate the effective dates of the family leave.

All FMLA requests will be administered in accordance with Harris County personnel regulations.
